Granite Countertop Sealing
Process of pre-sealing
It is very important to determine whether the sealing procedure is actually necessary before the actual sealing of countertop is done. Drops of water can be used for the test. It would mean resealing has to be done if the drops of water get absorbed. The test has to be done by experts as they will have the technical know-how of any granite countertops.
Materials required for resealing
It is very crucial to use the right sealing materials. The following items are what you will generally need: soft, clean rags, non toxic sealing agent and a cleaning solution.
Different kinds of sealant
There are many commercial sealers currently available. These are just a few of them:
Topical sealer – This type of sealer does not need to penetrate the inner layers in a granite countertop. What happens is that the sealer makes a thin clear film on the countertop’s surface. The topical sealer can be temporary (stripped) or permanent. This kind of sealing agent is not recommended as it traps moisture in the granite’s inner layers. Moisture that is trapped can cause cracks on the countertop.
Coating sealer – It is not advisable to use a coating sealer for countertops that are used often as it can be easily removed. Ask the manufacturer or read the label first in case you want to use a coating sealer since not all are compatible to granite.
Penetrating sealer – This should only be used when you have made sure your countertops are clean. Before wiping it off with a clean rag, let the cleaning solution rest on the rug for a minute. Once this is done, you can apply the first penetrating sealer coat. Do not apply the second coating until the sealer has set for about four or three minutes. The coating should set in the countertop for at least two hours before repeating the whole process.
Permanent sealer – This type of sealer is commercial, water based and quite hard to remove. It is not recommended for granite countertops that have to be resealed once every two or three years.
Even though there are various types of sealers in the market, it is still better to have granite countertop sealing expert do the job on your behalf. Such specialists will not only have the proper experience, but they will also possess the right sealing and cleaning solution as well as equipment. This will ensure any resealing job you require is done to perfection.
